As far as I can tell, there is a serious problem with the Windows GDI+ code I am currently using to read and write JPEG and GIF files, namely that it saves black and white images as color. Not only is this inefficient, but it causes problems with the embedded profile which suddenly becomes invalid since you cannot apply a gray profile to a color image. I don't see any workaround right now so until I have a solution to this problem, avoid saving black and white JPEG or GIF files.
