I just realized (thanks to one of Den's posts) that the input image for the interactive Mask Dialog does not have to be the same as the input image in a transformation in which the resulting mask is being interactively used (as long as the two inputs have the same pixel dimensions).
For example: one could extract a channel from an input image (or transform the input in some other ways), then use Mask Dialog on this extracted channel to produce an interactive mask. This mask can then be used interactively in a transformation on the original input image. Brilliant.
