8-bit JPEGs, saved with older version

Just in case it happens to one of you, too:
In 2002, at the very beginning of my digital photography and PWP career, I digitized a few rollfilm negatives for a friend and processed them with PWP 3.2.
The files were saved as 8-bit (black and white) jpegs.
My friend now has Lightroom and those few files could not be displayed.
First i thought the files may be corrupted, but they open in any other picture viewer I have on hand, and of course fine in PWP.
I have found some other 8-bit JPEGs from experimenting with an IR-filter from that time and they showed the same effect in Lightroom.
Resaving them in PWP 7 (also as 8 bit black and white JPEG) made then display properly in Lightroom.
So I guess there was some incompability with the early version of PWPs JPEG engine.
