Den posted an article "skin polishing/smoothing..." a long time ago. It included a mask made with the paint tool which had various tones in it. I haven't been able to figure out how one can change the tones as one combines the separate masks.

Any advice?

One way is to set the transparency of the paint tool very high so you can build up the mask slowly.

Another is to use the freehand mask tool to roughly outline the area or areas you want to mask and the use the mask blur tool with a large radius to soften the edges.
