Editing or recreating gradient masks ?

Post by davidh »

1. use some transformation e.g. Brightness
2. click Amount - New mask... choose Linear Gradient, draw a line, click mask Apply -> you get the gradient mask overlay along the drawn line
3. click on another image to hide both transformation dialog
4. click on the transformation dialog to display it
Instead of the steps 3. and 4. you can also just close the mask dialog and continue to step 5.

5. go to Amount - Edit... -> the mask overlay is displayed but the drawn line is gone and cannot be re-drawn,
6. click on B or W point and make it gray -> the Apply button stays grayed out and the change cannot by re-applied

There is no way to edit the gradient mask only to clear and recreate it, but this may be the intentional procedure.

-------

However the following scenarios do look like bugs:

1. repeat the steps 1. and 2. from above
3. click Apply again -> you get the solid (non gradient) mask overlay

and

1. repeat the steps 1. and 2. from above
2. click the Save button
3. use Mask Settings - Reset or any other way described above to deactivate the mask dialog
4. choose again Linear Gradient, click the Load button and load the saved gradient -> you get the solid (non gradient) mask overlay

The same applies to Oval Gradient

after some more activity, here are some additional details:

1. start a transformation, go to Amount control - New mask...
2. create a gradient mask and Apply it

3. click on transformation Amount control and choose Edit...
4. click on Undo the last operation -> the mask overlay disappears, the drawn line is back
5. double click one of the points on the color bars to display the gray level picker and change e.g. black to gray, do not click the mask Apply button
6. close the Mask dialog -> the icon next to transformation Amount control stays all black, and the masked effect in the output preview stays removed even though the changes to the mask were not Applied
7. click on the transformation Amount control and choose Edit... -> everything is restored to the the situation before the step 1. - the changed color point is back to black and the output preview shows the masked effect
8. close the Mask dialog -> everything stays OK

Another scenario, the first 5 steps are the same:

1. start a transformation, go to Amount control - New mask...
2. create a gradient mask and Apply it
3. click on transformation Amount control and choose Edit...
4. click on Undo the last operation -> line is back
5. double click one of the points and change black to gray, do not click the mask Apply button

6. click Undo the last operation to undo the change to gray -> the gradient tool is closed - the color bar disappears
7. click Redo last operation -> the gradient color bar and the mask overlay are restored, the color point is back to black
8. click again Undo the last operation -> the mask overlay disappears but the line is not restored, from now there is no way to restore the line

It looks as it the step with the color point change removed the color line from the undo history. If you skip the the change of the point color you can undo and redo the line over an over again.

I wonder what Amy would have made out of it :)
