Re: Retiring an HP 930C

You can do a helpful browse and search at the printers and printing forum http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/forum.asp?forum=1003 . Although the reader needs to evaluate opinions and doublecheck the accuracy of arcane statements of fact, the information is helpful. Epson's U.S. website has a clearanc...

Re: Watermark question

Take a look at the free program Fast Stone, specifically Tools | Batch Convert | Advanced Options | Watermark , including choice of position.

Gimp film-simulation resources

Gimp scripts emulating Portra, Provia, and Velvia films are at http://silicosaur.hu/photofx/ If I read it correctly, the guts of the Provia script is simply a curve: (define (splineRed) (let* ((r (cons-array 8 'byte))) (set-pt r 0 0 0 ) (set-pt r 1 59 54 ) (set-pt r 2 202 210 ) (set-pt r 3 255 255 )...

Re: Composite Transformation question

You have two windows to work with, the window for the base image when you open the Composite Transformation, and the Preview window, presumably on auto preview. You can change the size of the preview window and its zoom ratio. So you can leave the base image zoomed out with the alignment point visib...

Fast Stone shows you the embedded JPG

While you wait for PWP to bloat up to PhotoShop proportions, you can see the embedded JPGs with Fast Stone. I use this shareware viewer to review a day's shots, selecting the ones to get serious treatment in PWP. Fast Stone also does most elementary RGB transformations so you can see whether a shot ...

Re: Bit Depth of Raw Converter

Thank you, Jonathan, for the basic facts about gamma in photography - much better intro than Wikipedia at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gamma_correction . However, that article has a helpful chart of grayscale levels about halfway into the text. It shows two gray spectra, with gamma applied and witho...

Examination of shot with lens cap on

Took a shot with the lens cap on, shutter set to 1/500 second. Ran the DNG file through PWP Raw Converter 5.0.1.9 with no changes. Sampled random pixels with Readout tool set per Dieter (1 x 1 that is, single pixel read, RGB values in decimal). There were many triples 0,0,0, perhaps half of the doze...

Reducing haze

This winter (northern hemisphere!) I greatly reduced fog from a few images. Heighten contrast in the midtones only. I use BrightnessRGB, don't know whether that is best choice. I like histogram view for this operation. Confine the midtones with two fixed vectors, stretch two vectors between them out...
