Re: High ISO Digital Monochromic [BW] Imaging

There's a nice example here. The shot of the Train in the Snow that comes up as a full sized shot. http://www.agencevu.com/photographers/photographer.php?id=1 See what I mean about the irregularity of the grain sizes. I guess what helps is the extreme contrast of the shot and the heavy overprinting ...

Re: High ISO Digital Monochromic [BW] Imaging

I'm watching guys. I am not sure that a texture overlay is going to work as it is too regular - in that it effects light, mid and dark tones similarly. I'm trying to source a nice grainy image to put up as an example. I used to have some great jazz clubs shots in a book, but can't find any images on...

Re: High ISO Digital Monochromic [BW] Imaging

"TonyG… Is this perhaps what you had in mind for your [vintage?... retro?] ‘film look’?" To be honest, I'm not sure, Den. I find it hard to interpret those small images. However, what I would find a problem with in your workflow is that you work from a specially taken image - with RAW and ...

Re: Adding noise anyone?

Maciej, Thanks for that reply. It's a pity that the thread you found, from 2003, does not seem to show any particularly convincing examples of simulated grain. What it suggests is that simply overlaying a texture is not going to work. It's also a pity that those images in the final posts never appea...

Re: Adding noise anyone?

Den, I had to chuckle when I read that reply above. Here is me trying to suck you down into emulating Henri Cartier Bresson with his early Leica and there is you teaching me how to use my 350d to emulate a 10 by 8 plate camera !! No wonder I felt I was getting the wrong answers !! You know the sort ...

Re: Adding noise anyone?

I read Den's response to say that digital looks like digital because of its imperfections. He listed all the criteria he sought and the assorted techniques to achieve them. I'm assuming, Den, that you are saying get a digital image as close to perfection as you can and it will look like film. When I...

Re: Adding noise anyone?

Yes, Den, that is certainly why.

What fascinates me is 'what is the difference?'.

Less sharpness? Grain in the shadows? Longer tonal range? Shorter tonal range?

In other words, how do I take a digital file and use PWP so that it fools the film enthusiasts into thinking it was shot on film?

Re: Adding noise anyone?

Mike, Den, Would you ever consider applying the effect to the whole image? If you Google 'Making digital photographs look like film' it finds 40 million entries. A quick browse through the first page seems to find, mainly, people flogging off Photoshop add-ons - or rather cumbersome Photoshop work f...

Re: Adding noise anyone?

Mike, You said "I recalled that I have had occasions where the skin looked 'plasticky' so, once again thanks for the tip." I'm surprised that so few PWP users have responded to this thread (but then I would say that wouldn't I!!). Ever since I started with digital I have been aware of the ...

Adding noise anyone?

There is a thread that ran on DPReview with the suggestion that adding some noise makes a digital photo look 'less digital'. The thread soon runs out of steam, as oft happens at DPR, but the first page of messages gets the point across. It is:- http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/readflat.asp?forum=10...
