The problem with using too small a gamut is saturation clipping, not brightness clipping.

This is exactly why I don't recommend using super-wide color spaces - most colors are compressed into a small area and there are not enough bits to avoid posterization which is exactly what you are seeing. It comes back again if you click on a control point. The value can be different for each control point.

While I don't have one, the Apple Cinema display is supposed to be very good and should work on a PC if you have a DVI connector. I bought a Dell 2009W a year or so ago and am not very happy with its off-axis viewing which is much worse than the Cinema display. Maybe the newer Dells are better.

It can be proven mathematically that there is no compression scheme that will not enlarge some files. Both LZW and ZIP depend on finding repeating patterns within the image which may be few and far between for noisy images. I don't think so, but I haven't tried it. I seriously doubt if the drivers for the colorimeter will not install.

Not within the tranformation - as with any transformation you can create a mask manually and use Composite to blend the transformed image back into the original image with the mask to restrict the effect to certain areas.
