David, If you are using a profile which applies a gamma correction, you should set the gamma in the raw dialog 1.0. (A gamma of 1.0 makes no change.) Otherwise you will be applying gamma twice. Set to raw settings is one of the choices in the raw dialog options menu. After you open an image you can reset all controls either to Raw Settings or to Camera Default (providing you have previously set a default for the camera).

The dynamic range in Raw dialog is a bit more complex than the one in Level and Color because it is integrated with additional functions not present in the Levels and Color. There is an optimization -- clicking on a widget does not run all the previous widgets. However it does require loading an image. Usually that is quite fast. In your case it was slow because the active image was a Raw image.
