The error message is clearly wrong and I will fix it for the next release, but the error is in the second input, namely 0 is not a legal value for the dpi (Resolution) setting.

Composite lets you specify masks for both the base and overlay images and lets you resize the overlay image to align with the base image,

Yes, this is usually done using the Composite transformation.

You can also use masks with the Clone tool to protect parts of an image from being modified.

What appears to be happening here is that in some cases such as Fill Panel, the input image cropping rectangle is set to less than the full image and it remains that way until you reset the cropping rectangle. The difference preview was showing preview - input which make white specks looks black and vice versa. For the next release, I switched it to input - preview so white specks show up white in the preview and black specks show up black. I think this is what was causing the confusion.
