Wow, thank you Jonathan. The smudge tool looks much better now (even better than PWP7)

Not sure how to describe this - a square outline surrounds the smudge tool, leaves square edges. PWP7 does not exhibit this.
Are there parameters I need to adjust to reduce this effect?

Sage advice. I never use the same password twice, which takes an inordinate effort to maintain, but I'm afraid that a password manager might get hacked... Do you have any thoughts on how they work and if that could be a possibility?
